Things that matter...

As I get older I realise that some things matter, and that really, some things don't.

Yesterday was not a pleasant time to hang around social media - the hatred and abuse doled out left right and centre over the local elections was symptomatic of society as a whole these days...and a pretty good vision of how bigoted people can be, whatever party they support.
Anyway, I very quickly realised that arguing with people you've never met, over a topic you don't care about - well, that's one of those things that doesn't matter. Social media is a brilliant tool for communicating with like minded people all over the world, but when it comes down to the sort of abuse you wouldn't give or take in public, then surely that's another failure for society.

Things that do matter however...

Sleep, sleep definitely matters. Or, more accurately, it matters when you don't get enough of it... Lying awake at 1am is not fun when you know the alarm is going off at 6:20. Lying awake at 3am is exponentially less fun, as you can imagine.

Connections and Friendships, they matter, a lot. This weekend Miss G. and I are crewing for a friend who's running the Grand Union Canal Race, the small matter of 145mi (approx.) from Birmingham to London. Along the way we're picking up another friend to help in the task. It's a reason sleep matters - from 6am start time tomorrow we'll be non-stop for 30 hours, the same as our friend. Why do we do it? Because friends matter, and helping out at a race is huge fun. We'll be tired, sweaty, (probably) very wet (looking at the forecast), and having a fantastic time.

Music matters. I hope everyone out there understands why, but if not, stick around, ask questions, hopefully you'll find a reason why for yourself.
It was pay day on Tuesday, so some more vinyl was ordered. Disappointingly only one has arrived so far, and, as I'm about to leave to travel to the race listening will have to wait. For anyone who's interested it's Englaborn by Johann Johannsson, and I can't wait to lower the stylus onto the spinning vinyl, sit back, and let the sound travel to me.

Of course, the most important thing that matters is love... As John Lennon said "All you need is love", and he was right.
